Improving Obesity Surgery Outcomes

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is currently considered the most effective treatment for obesity.  However, the long-term effects of surgery on weight loss, physical health, and psychological health are variable.  In collaboration with our colleagues at the Bariatric Surgery Program at University Health Network, we study psychosocial aspects of bariatric surgery.  Current studies are examining psychosocial predictors of bariatric surgery outcome and psychosocial adjustment following bariatric surgery. We also develop evidence-based psychosocial treatments for bariatric surgery patients with the aim of improving bariatric surgery outcomes. Graduate students in the HEAL lab gain clinical experience with bariatric surgery patients by working as study therapists on CIHR-funded multisite randomized controlled trials examining the efficacy of a telephone-based cognitive behavioural therapy (Tele-CBT) intervention that focuses on improving eating behaviours and overall well-being.
