People with multiple equity-seeking identities are at higher risk for alcohol and other substance use-related harm. However, research on queer and transgender South Asian young adults, in particular, is limited. Moreover, past research has often grouped South, East, and Southeast Asians together, overlooking important within-group differences. The large South Asian population in Canada, combined with the significant health and financial impact of substance use, highlights the need for more research in this underserved group. This study aims to explore the experiences of LGBTQ+ South Asian young adults (ages 18-32) in Canada regarding alcohol use and support services.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a peer researcher with 20 participants, and focused on (a) cultural barriers and conditions for accessing safe treatment, (b) building resilience to external and internal stressors, and (c) navigating social norms around alcohol and other substance use.
