PACT Adult Study

Data analysis is ongoing for this study, check back soon for updates.
Data collection for the PACT Adult study began in November 2023. In total, 100 transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults of drinking age (18-19+ depending on the province in which they resided), in Canada were recruited.
Participants were enrolled in a 21-day Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), a process that allows for surveys to be shared, and data to be collected, in real-time. The focus of these surveys centered around gender minority stress (GMS), and resilience, substance use, drinking motives, and alcohol-related harms. As of October 2024, all participants have completed the EMA portion of the study.
A subset of 40 participants are expected to participate in a one-on-one interview to gain a better understanding of their lived/living experience. Questions will focus on the topics of GMS and resilience, alcohol and cannabis use, and alcohol-related, as well as cannabis-related implications of use. Interviews began in November of 2024 and are expected to be completed by late spring of 2025.
Lastly, a one-year longitudinal follow-up has been included in the study; all participants will be contacted and asked to complete a survey similar to one presented at their initial appointment to assess what may have changed and/or stayed the same with respect to their reports of GMS, substance use, and mental health. The longitudinal portion of the study began in November 2024 and is expected to be completed in October 2025.
The Garden
The Garden is the PACT Adult Study’s Community Advisory Board. Members live across Canada and identify under the TGD umbrella.
Our members meet 3-4 times a year to: give feedback on study design, discuss study updates, and discuss next-steps. Importantly, members are compensated for their time and knowledge.
The Garden and their contributions are integral to this study, and members are/will be involved at every step (i.e., from study design through to dissemination).
