Who we are / Vision Statement

The Advancing Research for Culturally Aligned Interventions (ARCAI) Lab is a research hub dedicated to promoting equitable access to effective psychological interventions for historically underserved communities. We achieve this through rigorous community-engaged research, comprehensive evaluation, capacity building, and informed policy development.

Based in the Department of Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University, the ARCAI Lab enhances mental health care access and quality through both local and global initiatives. Leveraging the scholarly and practical expertise within TMU, the ARCAI Lab fosters partnerships with community collaborators to advance mental health services and research.

Ultimately, our goal is to develop culturally-syntonic interventions that are accessible and approachable to a diverse public.

What we do

  • Engage in research with diverse populations locally and globally.
  • Research on how the intersection of mental health and social determinants influences risk and resilience in historically marginalized communities.
  • Break down barriers to accessing evidence-based psychological interventions for underserved communities by identifying and implementing strategies for more accessible and equitable mental health services.

  • Further knowledge on intergenerational trauma, investigating its transmission across generations, and developing interventions to promote healing within families and communities, particularly in post-conflict affected communities.
