We are a research lab at the Department of Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University led by Dr. Sarah Dermody<\/a>. In the Clinical Addictions Research and Equity (CARE) Lab, we\u00a0examine addiction risk from a multidisciplinary perspective\u2014integrating psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and biological risk factors to better understand the \u201chow, when, why,\u00a0and who\u201d pertaining addiction risk and risk for other negative health behaviors.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The CARE Lab is working on ways to help individuals improve their health by tackling addictions to substances. Much of our research focuses on problematic usage patterns of substances, particularly alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis.\u00a0We are interested in understanding risk and protective factors that can impact the use of each of these substances alone and in combination. Importantly, when these substances are used together, which is often the case, the health-related harms can be magnified. Ultimately, our research aims to inform and evaluate psychological, behavioural and pharmacological intervention approaches to help reduce the harms of using these substances.\u00a0<\/p>

An important aspect of our research is understanding why substance use and addiction can disproportionately impact some sexual and gender minority individuals. We are examining how minority stress experiences (e.g., being victimized due to one\u2019s minoritized identity) can impact substance use and related harms. We are also collecting data to investigate barriers that sexual and gender minority individuals face when seeking treatment for their substance-related concerns.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This study examined alcohol and cannabis co-use among 40 Canadian transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth using a 21-day ecological momentary assessment design.\u00a0<\/p>

Co-use days were associated with more substance-related harms than alcohol-only days, and youth were more likely to co-use (than use alcohol only) on days when they experienced higher levels of gender minority stress. Notably, youth were also more likely to co-use (than use cannabis only) on days when they reported greater resilience, suggesting that both gender minority stress and resilience are important factors associated with substance use patterns among TGD youth.<\/p>

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth may be at increased risk for alcohol use due to gender minority stress (GMS) and specific drinking motives. Nineteen youth across Canada were interviewed and shared their lived experiences surrounding GMS, drinking motives and implications of alcohol use. Harm reduction techniques used by youth were also explored.<\/p>

Gender minority stressors (e.g., discrimination, gender non-affirmation, etc.) are a risk factor for same-day alcohol use. Resilience factors may also be linked to increases in same-day use (e.g., through social\/conformity reasons).<\/p>

People who smoke cigarettes intermittently (on some days but not daily) are understudied in smoking research. This study examined a way of standardizing their smoking behaviour in the laboratory, which can help control their exposure to smoking to examine relevant predictors and outcomes. Effects on craving, withdrawal symptoms, cigarette satisfaction, and motivation to quit smoking were explored.<\/p>\n

Minority stress can put both sexual and gender minority (SGM) and racial and ethnic minority (REM) students at disproportionate risk of mental health symptoms and substance use. Over 1000 undergraduate students participated in an online survey examining their experiences with mental health symptoms, substance use, and barriers to accessing campus support services. Patterns between SGM and REM students and their heterosexual\/cisgender or white counterparts, as well as the impact of intersecting identities were explored.<\/p>\n

The CARE Lab is situated on unceded land in Tkaronto (Toronto), which is the traditional territory of five Indigenous communities: the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabewaki, Haudenosaunee, Attiwonderonk and Mississauga peoples. However, our research, staff, students, volunteers, and participants live and operate across many Indigenous territories across Turtle Island.
