Congratulations to Sophie Coelho on her recent publication, “The Perceived Causes of Problems with Substance Use, Gambling, and Other Behavioural Addictions from the Perspective of People with Lived Experience: a Mixed‑Methods Investigation”, in International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction!
In this study, we looked at whether the causes of substance use, gambling, and other behavioural addictions were consistent or different from the perspective of those with lived experiences in a secondary data set of the Quinte Longitudinal Study of Gambling and Problem Gambling (Williams et al., 2015).
What did we find?
– Perceived causes were relatively similar across the addictions, but differed in their relative proportions
– Coping was the most commonly cited perceived cause of addiction, suggesting an important interplay between addictions and
mental health
